Following a successful business career that spanned 50 years Mr. Broad and his wife Edythe now devote their time, energy, and resources to philanthropy through their foundations in education, science, and the arts ( Broad Stem Cell Research Center). Director Dr. Owen Witte recognizes the Broad’s commitment as a driving force behind UCLA’s ability to advance stem cell science at a more rapid pace and positions our stellar cadre of faculty at the leading edge of the field. After announcing this unprecedented commitment to stem cell research, the Center was renamed in their honor, through their foundation, generously donated $20 million to UCLA to advance our stem cell research efforts.

Moreover, the significant resources provided by The Broad Foundation has enhanced a program that brings together biologists, chemists, engineers, geneticists, and other scientists to develop new and more effective treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS, neurologic and metabolic disorders as well as other medical conditions. The gift funds the purchase of specialized, high-technology laboratory equipment and supports faculty recruitment through research grants and endowed professorships.
