Hematopoietic Stem Cell Support in Vasculitis
- Researchers from Northwestern University have published results from their limited study on the safety of stem cells as a treatment for diseases commonly characterized by the presence of blood vessel inflammation. The treatment plan for this study involved collecting and culturing stem cells from the patients’ tissues and transplanting them back into the patients. The results of this small study showed some promising results that could be expanded upon by a larger cohort. Out of the 7 subjects, 6 showed no serious adverse side effects and survived for 5 years after the treatment, giving the treatment over an 85% success rate.
